ALPS 2 OCEAN CYCLE TRAIL

8 or 9 Day Voyager

The full Alps 2 Ocean experience with 7 or 8 cycling days. This allows you to enjoy the trail at a leisurely pace, riding one section per day with plenty of time to appreciate and experience the varied landscapes and sights that the Mackenzie Basin and Waitaki District have to offer.

All of this with friendly support provided along the way, should you need it. Begin your adventure from the official start point at Aoraki/Mount Cook or the alternative start at Tekapo. This experience has flexible start dates to suit your needs.

What’s Included

  • Transfer from our depot in Omarama to your designated starting point of Aoraki/Mount Cook or Tekapo.

  • Cycle hire – Merida Crossway 100 Hybrid Touring / Merida E-bike.

  • Cycle accessories – helmet, rear trunk bag with drop down sides, gel seat cover, puncture repair kit, bike lock, drink bottle holder and high visibility vest.

  • Seven or eight night’s accommodation of an excellent standard in double or twin share (additional cost of $450 (Tekapo) or $470 (Aoraki) for a single supplement).
  • Helicopter flight from Mount Cook Airport if you select Aoraki start.

  • *Meals: breakfast provided in most/all locations – seven or eight in total; evening meal included in one, two or three locations; lunch provided for two, three or four days. Total number of meals is dependent on accommodation availability and where you start your ride from.

  • Daily baggage transfer (1x 15kg bag per person) between all accommodation providers.

  • Tour itinerary, directions to accommodation and A2O trail map provided.
  • Cycle breakdown and rider support service.

  • Daily check-ins with Trail Adventures in person or by phone.

Itinerary

No matter which start you choose, the tours start the same fabulous way.  In the afternoon, make your way through to your accommodation in Omarama. At a predetermined time, we will meet you at our depot at St Thomas’ Church for a bike fitting so you feel confident to start your ride tomorrow.

If you have selected the Aoraki start point:

(This section is not part of the Tekapo Tour, please skip ahead to the next section if you’re starting at Tekapo).

Board the 8.30am shuttle from our depot for a transfer through some amazing scenery to the trail start point at White Horse Hill Campground. We prepare the bikes for you and then it’s approximately an 8km cycle down to Mt Cook Airfield where you’ll board a helicopter for a short transfer (scenic flights can be added) across the Tasman River to the Rotten Tommy landing area. Please be aware that at times, due to weather conditions, the helicopter is unable to fly or has to take an alternative route. If the helicopter is unable to fly, we transfer you around to the nearest safest starting point to the helicopter drop off to continue riding. After the transfer you’ll continue riding down the side of Lake Pukaki to Braemar Station

If you have a vehicle, you are welcome to leave it at our depot while you ride the trail.

If you have selected the Aoraki start point:

Today you’ll cycle further down the side of Lake Pukaki enjoying the view of Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park before heading across the Pukaki Flats to Twizel where you’ll spend the night.

If you have selected the Tekapo start point:

Board the 8.30am shuttle from our depot where we will transfer you through to the alternative start which begins just outside Tekapo township. We’ll get you all set up on your bikes and then you’re ready to go. Upon reaching Lake Pukaki, you’ll cycle along the side of the lake, enjoying the amazing view before heading across the Pukaki Flats to Twizel where you’ll spend the night.

If you have a vehicle, you are welcome to leave it at our depot while you ride the trail.

Today you cycle along the edge of stunning turquoise coloured canals, and the southern edge of Lake Ohau along a beautiful trail.

It’s a steady climb up out of Ohau to the highpoint of the A2O trail at 900m above sea level. The destination is Omarama but make sure you take a look at the Historic Benmore Station woolshed and consider a side excursion to The Clay Cliffs along the way. If you’ve left your vehicle at our depot, you could drive to the Cliffs after arriving in Omarama.

Leaving Omarama you ride down the Waitaki Valley, following the edge of Lake Benmore to Sailors Cutting – a popular boating, fishing and camping destination. You will then be able to experience the newest part of the trail which continues to follow Lake Benmore across local farmland before arriving at Benmore Dam and riding through to Otematata where you will stay the night.

Today’s ride will take you around the edge of hydro lakes Aviemore and Waitaki with you finishing your days ride in the quaint little town of Kurow.

After breakfast you will set off, riding through Pasquale Vineyard and alongside the mighty Waitaki River. Take a look at the ancient Māori rock drawings before arriving at the historic town of Duntroon.

Today you’ll follow the trail through several farms to the unique rock formations known as Elephant Rocks. You’ll continue on and be surrounded by limestone escarpments before riding through to Oamaru taking in the beautifully manicured Oamaru Public Gardens along the way to the trail finishing point at Oamaru Harbour. Between 2.00pm and 3.00pm, meet the shuttle at the end of the trail to collect your bags and for the bikes to be transferred back through to our depot in Omarama.

From here you can continue with your journey, you can board the 3.15pm shuttle for a transfer through to our depot ($50 per person plus $15 if you have your own bike) or we can book a night’s accommodation in Oamaru for you ($140 per person including breakfast).
